Marie Shiraki

I am Marie Shiraki, a re-entry student beginning to take college classes full-time this semester after thirty-two years of being a stay-at-home mom.  My husband and I have eight children, 5 girls and 3 boys, ranging in age from 32 to 13.  I have been busy!

For the past 8 years, my husband and I have had a family landscaping business as our sole means of support.  I have performed the majority of the business functions and plenty of weeding.  In July, Chris, my husband went back into the college personnel workforce to be a “success coach” at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College.  My youngest daughter started high school in August.  I decided that I should go back to school to learn how to perform the business functions of our company properly.

I learned how to type on a typewriter in 1978 so I thought that Keyboarding would be a great foundation for everything that I need to learn.  I have learned everything that I know about the computer by the “hunt and peck” method so I am taking an Introduction to Computer Applications and Concepts class as well.  My desk is always covered with stuff and we have boxes of papers in the shed that we do not know what to do with.  The third class that I am enrolled in is Records Management.  Accounting is my final class.  I am not sure why I am taking it…I guess just to make my first semester difficult.

My immediate goal is to successfully complete this semester and see what I learn about trying to be a full-time mom, grandma and college student.  Basically, I will try to survive and see how it goes.  Eventually, I would like to earn a bachelor’s degree in business with an emphasis in small business management and entrepreneurship and a minor in family science.  I would love to go on to get a Master’s degree in business education.  I hope to position myself professionally and educationally so that when my husband retires (He is older than me.) we will be able to serve an under-privileged population, either in the U.S. or abroad, to help families become self-sufficient.

As I have taken the opportunity to share about myself, putting down on paper (or in this case posting on the web) what I have been thinking, I have discovered things that I did not know about myself.  I believe that is one reason why people write, to learn about  themselves.
